Slot Terms: Glossary
Here, briefly explained, are some of the more common slot terms that you will come across playing slots at an online casino.
Coin Size . The total value of the coin(s) bet for each spin.
Hit Rate. The rate at which a player wins (hits) on a spin compared to non-winning spins.
Max Bet. The maximum number of coins that you can play on a particular machine each time you spin.
Pay Cycle. The amount of spins it takes for any particular machine to pay out. Some players believe that in order to meet the programmed payout percentage every machine will go through a cycle where it must payout after receiving a certain number of coins.
Pay Line. The line or lines (generally 3 or 5 but sometimes as much as 10) on a slot machines screen where the winning symbols line up in order for the player to win a given amount.
Progressive Jackpot. A type of slot game with a top prize amount that grows in accordance to the amount of coins inserted by players in a network of machines.
Reels. Another name for the individual wheels that the symbols are printed on. Most slot machines have three reels but some machines may contain 2, 4 or more reels. Obviously, the more reels on a machine, the harder it is to achieve a winning combination.
Symbols. The pictures or icons printed on the reels. These symbols are the characters of the slot machine and the manufacturer can choose any symbol they wish. 7’s or pictures of fruit (cherries, oranges, etc.) are the most common.
